Five Signs That You Might be a Witch

What is a witch?  What do I need to do to become a witch? Is there a membership card?  Over the years I have received all of these questions and a host of similar ones.  It’s a lot like asking “How do you become a chef, a baker, an author or an artist?”. There isn’t a clear answer, there are lots of paths, but in the end its devotion to your pursuit and hard work play a big part.

However, there are some clear signs that you are inclined to be a witch.  Here are my top 5:

#1 You feel a deep connection to nature

Most witches feel connected to the natural world.  We tend to be the sorts of people that like to grow plants and work with herbs.  We often prefer the earth’s gifts to man made products.

This makes sense when you think that a fundamental belief among most witches is that we are part of the universe, not separate from it, and our power comes from working with the universe and sharing energy with the universe. It would seem odd to most witches to be unconnected to a universe that you wish to work with.

#2 You honour your intuition

Witchcraft generally requires a person to listen to their gut.  In fact, most witches are drawn to witchcraft because “it just feels right”.  They trust their gut when it comes to the crystal that they buy and the message that the tarot spread is providing.  Generally, witches have a strong gut feeling, can feel the truth in their very bones, and can usually rely on it.

Now that isn’t to say that if you are a witch, you never make a wrong choice.  Witches are people too.  We sometimes want something so much that we ignore our gut or we don’t trust it for a whole host of other reasons. However, most witches, if they listen to their gut and not their ego can usually know what to do.

#3 You create rituals

Witches are often drawn to ritual, from the rhythm of kneading bread to how we get dressed or brush our teeth.  It is this ritual that adds intention to everything that they do.  From making a batch of cookies to packing a lunch, everything is done with intention.

For some they will say that they made it with love.  Others will do it that way because that’s how mom did it.  The key is that they know that for them, that is how it is to be done.

#4 You’re drawn to symbols, tools and stories

Julie, the owner of Witch Chest, the store where I teach my beginner witchcraft courses, often tells witches that they “don’t need anything in the store to do magick”. That seems like a weird thing for a store owner to say, but it is true. Magick comes from your intention.

However, witches are also drawn to everything in the store.  Why?  Well, witches generally know that certain things help them focus their intention.  A red candle helps them connect with the feeling of love.  A crystal ball helps them to see their ancestors.  It is not that witches need these items, but they intrinsically know that they help them to tap into their natural power.

#5 You believe in energy, intention and possibility

In the end, witchcraft is very eclectic.  Witches have different beliefs, practices and customs, and they are all equally valid.  However, what bonds most witches is the innate knowledge that there is more.

It is that feeling that we are connected to the universe and each other by something more than dumb luck. Witches, know that there is an energy that we all share and that we are capable of influencing that energy. Witches see the possibilities that cannot be explained.

If you are reading this article, odds are you have a natural inclination to be a witch.  You may not call yourself a witch, the same as mom, who makes the best baked goods ever, may not call herself a baker.  However, if you can see these traits in yourself, the witch inside is likely calling to you.

Which of these signs resonate with you? What you think a witch is? Please share below.

For me it’s really a case of “all the above”.

I’d dabbled with Wicca close to 20 years ago but it didn’t “stick”. Now I realize it was because I wasn’t looking for a religion. I pretty much forgot about witchcraft other than enjoying Harry Potter. About a year ago I somewhat randomly picked up a witch fiction novel I saw on Instagram. “Buried Magic” by TJ Green. In the first paragraph a main character does a tarot reading and I had an epiphany that I needed to renew my practice.

It’s been an amazing year of research, learning, and exploration!

    1. Thanks for sharing, Dave. Your story is a lot more common than you may think. Many people get into witchcraft in their youth, and while many stick with it, a lot of others drift away. Sometimes life gets in the way, or they feel society’s pressure, or it isn’t what they need at that stage in their life. Regardless of why we may leave, the universe is really good at re-introducing us to the craft when we are ready for it. One of the nice things about the craft is that it can be what you need, when you need it. There’s no membership card that expires or annual dues. It’s just about you and your relationship with the rest of the universe. I look forward to supporting you as you continue your research and exploration. Blessed Be!
